Description
A cozy, spiced apple syrup made from fresh apples, brown sugar, and warm spices, perfect for pancakes, waffles, and beyond.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large fresh apples, peeled and chopped
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 to 4 whole cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Set your saucepan over medium heat and prepare all ingredients.
- Combine chopped apples, water, brown sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves, nutmeg, and salt in the saucepan. Stir well.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce to a simmer.
- Simmer uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are soft and the mixture thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and vanilla extract. Let rest for 5 minutes.
- Strain through a fine mesh sieve, pressing solids to extract as much liquid as possible.
- Transfer to a jar or bottle and serve warm or cooled.
Notes
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced flavor.
- For a thicker syrup, simmer longer without a lid.
- Let the syrup cool before storing to avoid condensation.
- Double the batch and freeze in portions for future use.
