- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a baking dish.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook briefly.
- Slowly whisk in milk until smooth. Add garlic, salt, pepper, and 1½ cups cheese. Stir until melted.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the baking dish.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
- Add the remaining potatoes and cover with the remaining sauce.
- Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove foil, sprinkle the remaining cheese, and bake another 20 minutes until golden.
- Allow the dish to rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Slice potatoes evenly for the best texture.
- Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly than pre shredded cheese.
- Let the dish rest before serving so the sauce thickens properly.
