Description

Creamy cheesy scalloped potatoes baked until tender with a golden melted cheese topping. A comforting classic side dish that pairs perfectly with many meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, freshly shredded
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook briefly.
  3. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth. Add garlic, salt, pepper, and 1½ cups cheese. Stir until melted.
  4. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the baking dish.
  5. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  6. Add the remaining potatoes and cover with the remaining sauce.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  8. Remove foil, sprinkle the remaining cheese, and bake another 20 minutes until golden.
  9. Allow the dish to rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes evenly for the best texture.
  • Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly than pre shredded cheese.
  • Let the dish rest before serving so the sauce thickens properly.
