Description

This Cube Steak with Onion Gravy is a comforting, down-home classic. Tender beef steaks simmer in rich, savory gravy made with caramelized onions and a touch of Worcestershire. Perfect with mashed potatoes or rice for a satisfying, weeknight-friendly meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cube steaks
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp water (for slurry)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil

Instructions

  1. Season steaks with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and sear steaks 2–3 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  2. Add onions to the same skillet. Sauté until golden and soft, about 8–10 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  3. Pour in broth, Worcestershire, and soy sauce. Scrape up browned bits from the pan bottom.
  4. Mix cornstarch and water to form a slurry. Stir into skillet and cook until thickened, 2–3 minutes.
  5. Return steaks to pan. Cover and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until tender. Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • For a creamier gravy, stir in a splash of cream at the end.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
  • Double the broth and slurry for extra gravy.
