Description
A cozy, comforting side dish of caramelized cabbage and onions, pan-fried to golden perfection with savory-sweet depth and a hint of vinegar.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium head green cabbage, thinly sliced
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
Instructions
- Place a large skillet over medium heat and allow it to warm up.
- Add olive oil and butter to the pan. Once melted, stir in the sliced onions and cook for 3–4 minutes until they begin to soften.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Then stir in the cabbage and toss to coat evenly in the fats.
- Season with salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir well and spread the cabbage in an even layer.
- Let it cook uncovered for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Allow parts to brown for caramelization.
- Once tender and golden, drizzle in the apple cider vinegar if using and give a final toss.
- Serve hot, garnished with herbs or chili flakes if desired.
Notes
- Use a wide skillet to avoid overcrowding and ensure proper browning.
- Add red pepper flakes for heat or smoked paprika for depth.
- This dish gets better as it sits—perfect for leftovers!
